Healthy is the New Black

superfoodsmoothiechallenge2So we’re all busy. Like too busy. And we’re all stressed. Holiday stressed. This is the time we want to look our best, for all those parties. For New Years. We want to feel our best as we run around trying to be superheroes. It happens every year. Sugar is everywhere we look. Too much sugar. Our immune systems. Oh our poor immune systems working so hard to protect us from ourselves. You’d think we’d have a better system by now. Well, my lovelies, here’s a challenge to keep you on your toes, looking good and feeling better! This year, try It’s Possible Project’s Superfood Smoothie Challenge. Because nothing looks as good as healthy feels (No, not even your gluten-free, vegan pumpkin cheesecake with walnut crust). Step 1 is always the most important because it’s the commitment to do something different or to change something that’s not working. And this time step 1 is to start the day off right. Let’s start the day feeling gooooood!

I’m sure you’ve heard a million times that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Why? Doesn’t what we eat at any point in the day play an equally significant role in our health and well being? Definitely! But here’s the thing about breakfast. Breakfast is the first digestible piece of nourishment that boosts our metabolism after an 8-12 hour fast. It sets the tone for the whole day. If we spike our blood sugar early on, we’ll likely crave sweets throughout the day. If we don’t eat, we’ll likely become overly hungry later on and eat too much. The body digests best when eating 5-6 small meals/snacks every few hours, rather than 2-3 large meals. Starting the day with a smoothie is a light, feel good way to get in a ton of nutrition first thing in the morning, making you feel more awake, alert, and productive as you prepare for the hustle of the day ahead.

Over the last few years, I have made a very conscious effort to make my health a priority. It began as a way to naturally heal a series of ailments, including allergic reactions and fatigue. Not only was it successful, but I also feel happier and have more energy for longer periods of time. It feels like I got my life back. It’s exhilarating, which is why I continue to actively work on what I call proactive healing. Proactive healing for me means taking small action steps daily to nourish my body, mind, and spirit so that I move through this world as my best self. Some days I take better care than others, but one thing I’ve really noticed throughout the years, is that my breakfast greatly impacts the food choices I make throughout the day.

I’ve been making fruit smoothies since I was a kid, simply because they are delicious. I’ve learned to take advantage of this tasty treat by incorporating vegetables to add in extra vitamins and minerals first thing in the morning. As I began the process of researching personal health concerns such as hormonal imbalances, anemia, low thyroid function, and mineral deficiencies, I became interested in the idea of specific foods that are extremely nutrient dense. One afternoon, I headed out to Whole Foods and just stood in their long aisle of nutritional supplements. Not knowing where to begin, I found an extremely knowledgeable employee and asked him what he would put into a smoothie. I left Whole Foods that day with what became some of my favorite bites of nutrition: maca powder to help with hormones, cacao for magnesium and energy, spirulina to build my immune system and provide essential trace minerals, coconut oil for internal and external medicinal effects, and flax seed for fiber and to help regulate blood sugar. I mixed and matched and began developing a recipe book of smoothies that soothe, heal, energize, restore, and nourish.

So join us this holiday season in the 5-day superfood smoothie challenge. My hope is you build a healthy breakfast routine, you begin to experiment with adding loads of nutrition early on, and that you get to experience your body’s reaction to different and possibly new types of nutrition. I want you to walk out the door each morning, feeling fantastic. Treat Yourself. Treat your family. For FREE. The word is out. Didn’t you hear? Healthy is the new black!
